DOE Launches the Hydrogen Shot Fellowship

Today, during the first Hydrogen Shot Summit, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Jennifer M. Granholm launched the Hydrogen Shot Fellowship to recruit diverse talent who can contribute to make Hydrogen Shot a reality. Hydrogen Shot is a “1 – 1 – 1” bold goal to cut the cost of clean hydrogen to $1 per 1 kilogram in 1 decade, which is an 80% reduction from the cost in 2020. Meeting Hydrogen Shot would make clean hydrogen part of the toolbox we need to tackle the climate crisis, create good-paying American jobs, and transition toward a clean, equitable energy future for all.

Hydrogen Shot will require bringing together all the resources, brain power, and tools to push the envelope with next-generation technologies that can cheaply produce, store, transport, and utilize clean and abundant hydrogen. Today’s Summit is one of the first steps in that journey, and the Hydrogen Shot Fellowship will help to build a pipeline of talented and bright professionals to work alongside DOE Hydrogen Program managers to help us achieve this bold goal and ensure its economic, environmental and societal benefits are distributed equitably across the communities that need them the most.

Funded through DOE’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO), Hydrogen Shot Fellows will engage in Hydrogen Shot related work from one or more HFTO technical programs, including Hydrogen Technologies, Fuel Cell Technologies, Technology Acceleration, and Systems Analysis, as well as other functional areas including communications, workforce development, and stakeholder engagement and inclusion. HFTO plans to bring in 1–2 Hydrogen Shot Fellows per fiscal year, depending on needs and funding available from individual HFTO programs or functional areas.
